Community Engaged Learning

"Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn."

What is Community Engaged Learning at Gonzaga?

Community engaged learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. It is integrated into, and enhances, the academic curriculum or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled.

Gonzaga Vision Statement

Deeply rooted in the centuries' old tradition of Jesuit education, Gonzaga University aspires to develop the whole person through contemplation, intellectual dialogue, and engagement within a vibrant Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic learning community. We exist to develop generations of leaders whose actions reflect a faith that promotes justice, the pursuit of truth, a dedication to service, and a commitment to ethics and the common good.

Community engaged learning at Gonzaga consists of four major components

  1. Integration of service and course work to create a circular classroom.
  2. Faculty and community partners serve as co-teachers.
  3. Students are active participants in and out of the classroom.
  4. Reflection is used as a guide for class discussion.
