The Origin of Species- a song
By: Kevyn Groot

So, it was finals week, and my suitemate Mary was studying for her Bio 101 final when I came back from taking mine. I sat down next to her and began messing around on my guitar, and I don't remember how it happened, but we wrote a song. It's to the tune of "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
We dedicate this song to all the freshman Bio majors at Gonzaga and our combined agony during last semester's finals. Let's keep holding on!

The Origin of Species

You say, we've got nothing in common
No common ancestor to draw from
But I say that you're wrong
Just look at my phylogenetic tree
Our species were meant to be
We all came from pond scum

And I said, what about, the Origin of Species
Invented by Charles as he sailed on the high seas
And he came to an island inhabited by birdies
And he said, adaptation's the one thing they got

Those apes, they look so dumb and hairy
And isn't it quite scary that one could be your dad?
So what now, do we invite them over
To watch football in October
Or just hunt them for food?

(Chorus)

You'll say, the ocean's come between us
Natural selection has come between us
But I really don't care
We're all part of one big happy family
Those cyanobacteria are friendly
Let's go home and party

(Chorus)

-Written by Kevyn Groot (Bio major) and Mary Neal (ex-Bio
major

I came across this great quote and thought it would be appropriate for this forum.

"The Universe is filled with magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper."

song of the cellular slime mold
By: Nancy Staub

A late night test-writing composition by Dr. Staub

(sing (loudly) to the tune of "on top of old smokey")
(suggestions for improvement and additional verses appreciated)

on top of the compost
there was a slime mold
a haploid cell feeding
all bacteria to behold

when times got tough oh
when times got bad
that cellular slime mold
joined up with a band

they formed a big slug thing
and toured around
and then settled down
on top of a mound

it formed a fruiting body
and then it formed spores
these spores did then scatter
all over the world

from out of the spore there
emerged haploid cell
to feed on bacteria
all over again.
