Thoughts & Prayers for Those Impacted by Recent Tornadoes

SUBJ: Thoughts & Prayers for Those Impacted by Recent Tornadoes
DATE: December 13, 2021

In the aftermath of the deadly tornadoes that struck five states Friday night and early Saturday, we are mindful of the tremendous loss and suffering of our fellow citizens there – especially as Christmas approaches. Our own Gonzaga community includes members with ties to those areas.

At least 80 deaths are confirmed as the search through the rubble continues. In Kentucky, where 64 died, those killed ranged in age from 5 months to 86 years. Thousands more were left homeless in that state and in Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas; many more will struggle until power can be restored.

While we can remember in our thoughts and prayers all those affected by this widespread natural disaster, relief agencies also will need help to meet victims’ needs. The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are among those providing assistance.

This tragedy, so disruptive to so many at what should be a joyful time of year, brings into focus our own bountiful blessings as we await, in relative peace and comfort, the arrival of Christmas.

May we reach out in any way we can to help those in need and redouble our kindness and goodwill to those near to us.

In prayer, God keeps calling us, opening our hearts to charity.
Pope Francis
